    Development of a solar-powered iron store portable reader

    Iron store reader is a device that used to measure the level of Iron in blood (red blood cell). Previously one iron store reader has been designed to measure the level of Iron of the human body. The Iron store reader has been designed using a circuitry contains RGB LED, Microcuvette, Photo detector and Arduino UNO microcontroller. Existing Iron reader needs electricity to run but in some remote area there is no electricity, Usefulness of iron store reader is yet to reach to the remote area residence. The aim to this project was to power up the iron store reader by adding a cost effective solar charging mechanism to the existing Iron store reader. An ON-OFF charging mechanism has been added to the device after studying the electrical characteristics and ratings of the iron store reader. Solar panel, Voltage regulator, diode, relay, resistors, capacitors and battery has been used to design a charging circuitry for the device. The performance the solar panel, Charging and discharging characteristics has been elaborated in the thesis. Designed solar charging mechanism of portable iron store reader can be charged by solar panel and it can run up to 6 hours once it is fully charged. Designed charging mechanism is able to provide 8.4V output with current supply up to 400 mA for 6 hours. The charging system is automatic and is able to protect the battery from overcharging. Designed solar powered Iron store reader is very portable and can be brought anywhere. Another aspect that has been discussed in this thesis, is the range of the most effective day hour to charge the devices when the available sun is comparatively high. Solar energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources. Nowadays the advancement of solar energy has spread too many remote and isolated fields even in small power consuming devices. It promotes green technology which is a very important factor in today's invention. Malaysia is one of highly potential candidate to utilize solar energy in many household and small scale applications. The average total solar radiation per day is 4 KWh to 5 KWh which proves that a lot of application and device can be designed based on solar energy.

    Design and develop on boiler header inspection

    This thesis documents the design process from concept generation to fabricate for a design for boiler header inspection. Every boiler header needs to be done inspection once in a week. The boiler needs to be inspected in order to detect any defect such as cracks, corrosion and so on. The project scope was narrowed down only for the boiler header which have the diameter range of 300 mm to 1000mm. Literature review and market research on the project's objective gives a better understanding about the entire design. The whole system designed using CAD software such as the Solidworks 2016. Stress analysis has been done on critical parts of the design. The design was improved accordingly before finalizing the complete design. Finalized design was then sent for fabrication process to obtain the prototype. Upon completion of fabrication process, the prototype was tested with using a PVC pipe to ensure that the design fulfill the requirements and meet the project's objectives.

    Medication reminder using microcontroller

    According to the 2012 statistics provided by Ministry of Health, about 48.56% of the causes of death in hospitals are due to diseases on circulatory, respiratory and digestive system. As these diseases are life-threatening, patients should be monitored closely even if individuals are discharged from the hospital. This thesis reports the development of medication reminder using microcontroller so that the system can be implemented in the hospital or can be utilized as personal equipment. The system will take input from the user according to the needs and reminds the bearer to perform health administration. The system also made monitoring of health conditions possible by displaying the information needed on the computer using wireless connection technology. It employs the usage of microcontroller such as Atmega 32 in Arduino to communicate with the keypad, the display, the DS1307 Real-Time Clock, and XBee. The project was conducted in two parts that are the reminder system and the wireless connection linking the reminder system and the computer. The developments of the project require literature review of the microcontroller to communicate using serial communication and to produce the necessary output.

    Design and development of mechanical timer for livestock pellet conveying

    A mechanical timer for feeding pet function is not a new technology afterall. In current industrial modernization world, the cost of living is keep increasing and the dependency of electricity is high, and almost everything nowadays is relying on electricity to work. Though with that fact, factories throughout the country are using electronic timer in their manufacturing world, as well as farmers in their agricultural world. While some farmers are yet to be self labour work to do feeding livestock and watering the plant. Therefore as engineer-to-be, I would like to produce a mechanical timer which suits the functions in agriculture sector, in which in is not dependant on electricity and water sources anymore, so it will be truly portable without any piping or wiring needed if any relocation is needed. The mechanical timer consists of three main parts, the supply, the return, the pivoting timer with feeding function. The supply is just a container which will provide marbles, with gate function to confirm one marble flow at a time. The return will be a forward-reverse pivot, or a rotating wheel in which will carry marble back into supply container, and the pivoting timer will control the time intervals. The working object throughout the system are marbles of 400 pieces. It is choosen because of its spherical shape which is good at moving linearly or in circular, small in size, strong in collisions and high availability in the market. The size and amount of working object is important as it will affect the sizing of everything this mechanical timer required for each part.

    Analysis of time domain reflectometry parameters for XLPE cable diagnostics

    This project puts forward a guidance to analyse and set appropriate parameter of Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) system in order to diagnose the test cable. TDR is equipment that functions to detect fault in cables. Certain parameters likes pulse amplitude and pulse width need to be varied based on the suitability of the cable to be tested. As the test cable, XLPE insulated type is chose due to the well application of it in both power transmission and distribution. Those cable need to be maintained to ensure the well performance in preventing negative impact on customer's side.
