Abstract
This thesis is known as torrefaction of palm biomass for cofiring with coal. In this thesis, the review or scope of the project focuses on the area of study for oil palm biomass torrefaction. The overall project will consider the effect of oil palm biomass after it has been undergone torrefaction process. All in all, the fundamental is to clarify the objective of the project and proceed with the rest of the stage. Knowledge obtained in this project is used to apply on the designing process and proceed with fabrication. Torrefaction process is one of the processes that can be used to upgrade fuel properties in obtaining a good quality fuel. Oil palm biomass which has three parts has been tested to identify their characteristic properties before and after they undergo torrefaction process. Samples taken is firstly analysed in order to differentiate the differences before and after torrefied. Calorific value, mass yield, energy yield, and proximate analysis of empty fruit bunch, mesocarp fibre, and palm kernel shell had been discussed in this thesis. Designing process involves the details of specification of a torrefier and the most important part of designing is to cater for the heat transfer concept especially in the reactor for a better torrefaction process and to make sure the temperature of the vessel reaches its desired maximum temperature. It is important to emphasise the importance of torrefier design and the concept involved since the method is a genuine fact that can upgrade the characteristic of raw oil palm biomass physically and chemically for a better cofiring purpose thus enhancing a better and effective electricity production.
