Abstract
Arc flash can be occurred in most energized equipments or appliances and it poses threat on the electrical personnel which might exposed them to the hazard of shock, electrocution, arc flash, arc blast or even are thermal injuries. An arc flash occurred when there is a voltage breakdown of the resistance of air resulting in an arc which can occur where there is sufficient voltage in an electrical system and a path to ground or lower voltage. Exposure to an arc flash frequently results in a variety of serious injuries and in some cases death. Electrical personnel have been injured even though they were ten feet or more away from the arc center. The arc energy determines the amount of radiated energy and, therefore, the degree of injury. Thus, it is important to determine the intensity of incident energy released from arc flash. The main objective to pre-determine the level of arc flash incident energy is to identify the protection boundary and furthermore establish proper personal protective equipment (PPE). The main aim of this thesis is to design a software based calculator which is capable of performing Arc-Flash incident energy calculations based on IEEE Standard 1584. Besides that, there will also a literature review on the arc flash hazard and guide to perform arc flash analysis based on IEEE Standard 1584 for the reader or user of this software to have further understanding on how to establish input parameters and output variables for the arc flash incident energy calculations. For addition, there also have a discussion on the methodology used to design the software calculator. In this project, the software calculator is designed using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition with the Visual Basic Developer which is capable of design windows form application consist of graphical user interface (GUI). Upon completion, future students and researchers will be able to understand more about the arc flash incident energy calculation and its important role for industrial research and development to establish a safe work environment.
