Abstract
In line with our nation’s effort to increase our country’s electricity generation by renewable sources from the current 2% to a target of 20% by 2030, the use of solar power in Malaysia has been growing rapidly. This phenomenon is further accelerated by the declining solar costs as well as new and competitive packages that are being offered in the market. In order for a solar panel to convert solar energy from the sun into electricity for our everyday usage, the surface of a solar panel has to be exposed to sunlight. Furthermore, solar panels are placed outdoors, commonly on top of a structure and are subjected to the elements of nature. The purpose of this research is to study the impact temperature and irradiance on the power output of a solar photovoltaic (PV) panel. In order to achieve this project’s objectives, a pc-based monitoring system that utilizes an Arduino Nano microcontroller was developed in order to measure the temperature, irradiance level and the output power generation of the solar panels. The study was conducted on a (0.13m * 0.15 m), 2.5 W solar cell. For impact of irradiance, it is found that as the irradiance level increases the output power generated by the solar cell increases as well. This is due to the increase of output voltage and output current generated by the solar cell with the increase of irradiance level. The highest output power generated by the solar cell is 2.09 W at 128 W/m^2. As for the impact of temperature, it is found that as the temperature increases, the output power generated by the solar cell decreases. There is a 2% to 5% drop in output power generation with an approximately 5°C increase in temperature.
