Abstract
The most widely used public transport used today are buses because bus networks can be access easily and cheaper than other modes of public transportation. However, the quality of service of public bus is always being interpret as poor or low quality. In Kuching City, the public bus system has not been progressed which the bus services are relatively old and almost non-existent. The three objectives were to identify the quality of attributes for rating bus performance, to investigate the attributes measures of availability of bus services in Kuching, and to evaluate the attributes measures of comfort and convenience of bus services in Kuching. The Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual (TCQSM) was chosen as a guideline to measure the quality performance for bus services in Kuching. There are six (6) attributes studied from the guideline such as Service Coverage Area, Service Frequency, Hours of Service, Passenger Load, Transit Auto Travel Time, and On Time Performance. There are two (2) bus operators with two (2) routes were identified within Kuching City Centre. Based on the final results, a Quality of Service (QOS) of D was evaluated which considered as a minimum or satisfying level of QOS. The crucial recommendations for bus operators were to provide a proper waiting area or bus stops and to provide a fixed timetable of bus arrival and information of the timetable on every bus stop. The results of the study will be important for future planning of new economic developments that encourages people to use public bus in Kuching City.
