Abstract
The issue with acidic rainwater in this country is still new. People are not taking seriously that acidic rainwater can bring harm and can also damage the environment. Day by day, with a lot of combustion happen, hazardous gasses such as sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide is being release. When this dangerous gas is mix together with oxygen and water, rainwater acid occurs. The acidity of rainwater can dissolve metal such as zinc and iron and when this metal mix together with water from plumbing and guttering; it can effect human health such as diarrhea and skin irritation. Acid rainwater can also leach out buildings and damage the ecosystem of aquatic life. With the implementation of rainwater harvesting in Malaysia, the limitation information regarding acid rainwater can be a major issue in this country. According to National Water Quality Standard Malaysia (NWQSM), acid rainwater does violate the minimum pH requirement from NWQSM. Activated carbon can do a lot of wonders in treating water. However, there are still a lot of study need to be done regarding on how activated carbon can neutralize rainwater acid.
