Abstract
The thesis reports on the development of suitable lubricant for metal powder compaction at above ambient temperature. Three different lubricant powders are selected from their criteria as lubricant to be used to find the right mixture for the warm compaction process. The lubricant powder uses are zinc stearate, carbon powder and talc powder. The lubricant is add up into iron powder as the main metal powder and compacted at 180°C using compaction rig that available in Uniten Mechanical Laboratory. The range for lubricant powder is between 0.2 weight percentage and 0.6 weight percentages. Design of experiment has been develop to find number of sample should been done for the experiment. There are two type of experiment for this project that are green product and sintered product. Number of sample for green product is 27 samples and also 27 samples for sintered product. Each sample consists of 60g total weight percentage of iron powder and lubricant mixture. Mechanical characterization has been made to the sample to get the results for relative density, hardness values, flexure stress and micrograph evaluation. From the results, increasing carbon content will decrease the relative density for both green and sintered product. By increasing the zinc stearate and talc powder weight percentage, the relative density is increased. Due to high melting point, carbon powder did melt during sintering process thus give strength to the sample during bending test. Based on the results, the suitable lubricant mixture is the sample with 0.6 wt% zinc stearate, 0.4 wt% carbon and 0.6 wt% talc powder.
