Abstract
This thesis reports the development of an offline uninterruptible power supply (UPS) controller. The proposed UPS is able to protect electrical loads from several common power quality (PQ) issues namely interruption, voltage swell and voltage sag. Detection of these PQ issues is handled by the controller in the UPS unit. Design of the controller is directly related to the performance of a UPS. The detection of voltage disturbances and generating relevant signals to the rest of the components in a UPS are performed by the controller. Design of a controller affects the switching time between mains and UPS. Simulation of various voltage disturbances are carried out to imitate such situations in real time. The voltage distortion simulations are also used as case studies to test the controller operation. Results of the case studies are obtained and analyzed to deduce and verify the controller operation. Benchmark tests are also performed to observe the difference in results from two different offline UPS controllers.
