Abstract
Volume of Fluid (VOF) is one of the most widely use multiphase model. It is a direct numerical simulation method that tracks the free surface flow by storing the data of the volume fraction in a computational cell. In this project, a dam break problem is simulated by using FLUENT version 14.5 along side with VOF multiphase model. The validation of the VOF model is to be verified by comparing the results to the available experimental data. Results such as properties time graph and volume fraction contour are being compared. The results obtained from the dam break simulation shows that VOF has the potential of producing results with the similar pattern of graph trend and also wave pattern but not the magnitude of the properties such as pressure. The average value of the pressure that obtained from the result appeared to be smaller compare to the experimental data but there are no major differences. The accuracy of the result can still be improved by using the same time step as the experimental data. Due to the lack of the computing cost, the time step used for the simulation in this project is smaller than the experimental data.
