Abstract
This thesis reports the design of automatic voltage regulator controller in sim power system environment. The proposed design can maintain the terminal voltage of the synchronous generator at the reference value even when the values of the loads are changed. The research on the modelling of simple synchronous machine with three-phase parallel RLC loads is done to identify the effect of load variations on the terminal voltage of the synchronous generator. The design of the AVR with PID controller is modelled and simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK. This thesis proves that combining AVR with PID controller is better than operating a synchronous generator without any controller. The tuning of the PID controller is done through trial and error method to select the most suitable parameter. The simulation results for different gains of PID controller throughout the trial and error method are specifically presented. The data is collected for the system with AVR controller for different loads individually. A detailed analysis is carried out to study on the performance of the designed AVR controller on the specific loads. Finally, it is anticipated that the finding from this research should be a stepping-stone and as a motivation for future research.
