The impact of power quality delivered by underground cables became vital and popular among researchers and of course among power engineers not only in Malaysia but also worldwide. Bulky transmission system now becomes the most abhorrent system since it consumes land and also offered unpleasant view. Using Power Sytem Computer-Aided Design (PSCAD), this thesis presents on how to model and simulate a system that resembles a real power system in Malaysia in particular, underground cable system. Behaviour of transients will then be analyzed by creating transients using the PSCAD simulation software itself and how it is affecting the underground cables will be discussed in this thesis. Out of many different transient phenomena, two from them will be discussed and modelled precisely in the later chapter. These two behaviours are known as switching operation and impulse transient effect. Switching operation are known as the hardest electromagnetic phenomena to model and at the same time the harder to predict and analyzed. How to model and what are the most suitable method to use will also be discussed at length. While switching maybe the hardest phenomena to model, lightning or impulse response make the PSCAD simulation becomes very handy. Impulse can be easily generated or modelled in the software itself and thus make the analyzing part becomes very interesting and easy to describe by the user.
