Abstract
Safety is an important parameter in today's every vehicle and statistics shows that 60% of road accidents in Malaysia occurs during low light conditions especially at night time driving. Conventional headlamps do not provide illumination in the right direction on curve roads. Due to this constraint, Adaptive Headlight System (AHS) has been proposed by many researchers. The aim is to improve driver's visibility and therefore, achieve a significant increase in safety and driving comfort. AHS is an active safety feature that optimizes the illumination of curve roads during night time. The main objective of this work is to design and develop a low cost directional adaptive headlight system to rotate the headlamp horizontally corresponding to the steering angle input. Components that are available in the market and suitable for the development of the system were tested. The developed system consist of sensors (potentiometer and ultrasonic distance sensor), microcontroller and a servo motor. The Arduino microcontroller interprets the input from the analog sensor which is the rotary potentiometer and outputs digital signals to the servo motor to adjust the headlamp suitable for the corner. Developed system is implemented into a Perodua Myvi and critical parts of the AHS were subjected to various tests in order to measure its accuracy, its reaction time and the impact of the system. Obtained results are examined and any finding that maybe be useful for future development are discussed.
