Abstract
Tip leakage loss is the main contributor to the inefficiency of turbine and compressor. For many decades, many works had been done in order to find some useful solutions to overcome the problem. Experiment was insufficient to study the three- dimensional flow in turbine, thus CFD software was used to predict the flow. In this project, Fluent software was used to perform numerical simulation on a turbine cascade. The cascade profile was obtained from an experimental report, which studied the tip leakage flow. Six types of different model were simulated which consisted of different tip geometries. Three types of tip geometries are the flat tip, squealer tip, and squealer with winglet. For each geometry, different tips were simulated. Results will discuss on the effects of different tip geometries and the effects of different tip gap heights. The simulated results will also be compared to the experimental results to prove the credibility of simulated results. The outcomes from the study indicate that the flat tip produce highest losses. Model with larger tip gap will allows more leakage fluid through the gap and thus produce higher losses. The squealer and winglet tips successfully minimize the losses caused by tip leakage flow.
