Abstract
The work described in this report concerned with the study to improve the productivity of energy used by existing District Cooling System (DCS) implemented in University Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Putrajaya Campus as part of the mission to become a smart university. The DCS in UNITEN employ the chilled water Thermal Energy Storage (TES) which is considered as a technology under development in Malaysia. The system was studied and described in detail including the system design concept, its configuration capacity and operating mode. This report starts by describing the DCS/TES in general and its advantages compared to the conventional central air conditioning system. A study on the operating characteristic of the system was also carried out. Data from Facilities and Development Management (FDM) department were obtained for chiller plant build and analyzed to determine the power consumed and cooling load produced by the chillers on yearly, weekly and daily basis. The results of the analysis shows that the power productivity can become more efficient with better schedule and equipment maintenance. Finally, recommendation and future works were listed so that they could be carried out to improve the system operation.
