This paper proposes a method of determining the optimal proportional integral derivative (PID) controller parameters using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique. The stability of the power system is an important factor in the operation of any electric system. A PID controller with a power system stabilizer (PSS) has been developed to maintain the stability and enhance the performance of the power system. Optimization of PID parameters is an important problem in control engineering. A PSO algorithm has been proposed to tune the parameters of the PID controller. The effectiveness of the PID-based PSS has been tested on a single-machine infinite-bus (SMIB) system having a three-phase thyristor-based non-linear load with different kinds of faults. Analysis shows that the dynamic performance with the proposed method is better compared with the conventional trial-and-error method. The speed deviation, rotor angle deviation and load angle were compared in a Simulink-based MATLAB environment. The simulations show that the proposed method damps optimally and suppresses errors to a minimum. © 2006-2014 Asian Research Publishing Network (ARPN).en_US
