Abstract
Fe-based alloy has the most industrial usage. However, current practice of Fe-based alloy development is through foundry process which is expensive and the process is capable to produce only ingots of alloys not the end product. Therefore, this thesis reports the investigation on whether Fe-based alloy can be developed using powder compaction route. Iron powder ASC 100.29 was mixed with other alloying elements and the powder mass were compacted at different temperatures to generate green compacts. After that, the defect free green compacts is sintered in inert gas atmosphere at different sintering schedule. XRD characterization is performed to the sintered products to observe whether the sample become alloy. The effect of sintering temperature was studied in terms of mechanical properties, focusing in particular on the density measurement and compressive strength testing. The results showed that Fe-based alloy can be successfully developed using powder compaction route and the mechanical properties of sintered products are affected by the forming and sintering temperature.
