Abstract
Lightning strike is one of the major factor of electrical power supply outage. Lighting strike has been studied by power engineers for long time and especially in countries like Malaysia, which has one of the highest lightning strike recorded in in one year, power outages due to lightning strike is very high compared to other countries. In order to prevent this problem, many mitigation efforts have been done to increase the reliability of electrical supply for customer. In this project, the Power System Computer Aided Design (PSCAD) software has been used to simulate the lightning strike on overhead transmission line. The overhead transmission line has been designed using the Frequency dependent (phase) model of the PSCAD/EMTDC. The lightning strike is injected on the earth wire of the modeled overhead transmission line in the software and also the 3 phases of the power lines on a particular tower to study the effect of lightning surge on the power flow and also to differentiate the shielding failure and also the backflashover that occur due to the lightning strike on the transmission line. The input waveform at the substation is being recorded and being compared for each condition of shielding failure and also backflashover to differentiate the waveform of voltage that is entering the substation after the lightning strike.
