Abstract
Geomagnetically induced current (GIC) caused by geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) can be a serious threat to a stable electrical power grid operation. GIC that is induced in the earth magnetic field flows through the neutrals of grounded-wye transformers and cause increasing reactive power, Q losses which can lead to power system collapse. Hence, evaluating the geomagnetically induced current (GIC) in power system is really important to study the impacts of this event. This paper presents the evaluation and analyzation of GIC in 4-busses test case that have been done using GIC simulator in PowerWorld Simulator. The GIC values are then compared with calculation values that have been done using Nodal analysis technique. Significant conclusion from the analysis is the magnitude of geomagnetic field, and storm direction in degrees are two factors that affect the GIC values.
