Abstract
ABSTRACT Water purification technologies are one of the most widely used and on-demand technology in the whole world. Activated carbon is one the solutions to be used for water shortage around the world. Activated carbon (AC) mainly consist of two types, powdered and granular AC. Powdered AC has a size of 0.045 to 0.18 mm while granular AC’s size is between 1.2 to 1.6 mm. Activated carbon functions by adsorption, which adsorbs the unwanted particles from the water into the pores that exist inside it. Different sizes of AC adsorb different particles, so using both of it in the same system will give better results rather than using just one type. Comparing to other type of water treatment, activated carbon has higher capital cost, but significantly lower expenditure costs. The reason for this is because it doesn’t use a lot of power for its system to function and does not need to be replaced in a short time. From the tests done, the COD, pH, turbidity and total dissolved solid has been successfully lowered.
