Abstract
This thesis reports on the regenerative braking system technology apply in light rail transit (LRT) train with the help of a bi-directional dc-dc converter. The main objectives of this project are to assess the working principle of the regenerative braking system (RBS) and to assess what are the advantages and disadvantages and related issues of RBS. The conventional vehicles possess a braking system that unable to reuse the energy wasted from braking. Hence, the regenerative braking system is introduced in light rail transit train to converts kinetic energy or mechanical energy to electrical energy to charge up the energy storage system (ESS). The regenerative braking system will increase the travel distance, reduce fuel usage and reduce carbon emissions. Bi-directional converter (BDC) is essential in the regenerative braking system. It controls the movement of current in both directions, motoring and generating mode. Matlab SIMULINK R2019b software is used to design and simulate the battery circuit with a bi-directional dc-dc converter. The behaviour of RBS during motoring and regenerative operation is achieved by using this software.
