Abstract
The dwindling supply of crude oil and natural gas, as well as the global threats of climate change and other environmental concerns, have resulted in a rapid increase in alternative sources of energy. One such alternative is solar energy. The demand for PV systems is escalating recently due to the fact that they produce electricity without inhibiting the atmosphere by converting solar radiation directly into electricity. This paper focuses on a MATLAB based model of a photovoltaic cell. The model presented is based on mathematical equations and is described through an equivalent circuit including a photocurrent source, a diode, a series resistor, and a shunt resistor. In addition, the model can also be used to extract the physical parameters for a given solar PV cell as a function of temperature and solar radiation. Taking into account the effect of sunlight irradiance and the cell temperature, the output current and power characteristics of the PV model are simulated and optimized using the proposed model. Thus allows the prediction of PV cell behavior under different physical and environmental parameters using the developed model. This enables the dynamics of the PV power system to be easily simulated, analyzed, and optimized. The equations of the model are presented in details and the model is simulated in MATLAB through programming. To validate the model, the simulation result is compared with experimental data.
