Abstract
Oil palm fibre-reinforced Unsaturated polyester (UP) matrix and E-glass fibre-reinforced Unsaturated polyester matrix composites were fabricated using compression molding. The prepared oil palm/UP composite tensile strength (TS), bending strength '(BS), and water resistance (WS) test were 18.98 MPa, 424.22 MPa (MOE), 29.42Mpa (MOR) and 100 percent waterproof, respectively. E-glass fibre-reinforced UP matrix composites were fabricated in the same way and TS, BS, and WS values of these composites were 22.77 MPa, 599.08 MPa (MOE), 44.07 Mpa (MOR) and 100 percent water proof, respectively. Density of a product plays a major role especially if its applications are more toward automotive components and parts. Oil palm/UP shows an average value of 1477.463kg/m3 and for E-glass/UP a value of 1556.31 kg/m3 and it shows significant different of 5.1 percent reduction in overall weight. Since, the cost between oil palm fibres and glass fibres are very much different which is about Rm 2.15 for E-glass/UP while Oil palm/UP only cost 0.40 cent for the same dimension (30cm x 30cm x 0.3cm) sheet which can be reduced the overall cost of the product about 81 percent of cost reduction. Besides that, Oil palm/UP can be replaced as the next composite materials for automotive parts and components as it can cut down the fuel consumption since the overall weight of the car can also reduced. This in hand can be a promising product for automobile industry.
