The movement of a real object model is reconstructed through measurements of the position, direction, and angle of objects in 3D space in a process called "motion capture." With the development of inertial sensing technology, motion capture systems that are based on inertial sensing have become a research hot spot. However, the solution of motion attitude remains a challenge that restricts the rapid development of motion capture systems. Thus, to further to provide a system which is affordable, University Tenaga Nasional presented its students a task to develop a motion tracking device in the Final Year Project. Since the components, products and the system are costly, hence it is vital to produce a cost effective device. Former to get a final design, one must conduct a thorough research and apply the principles of Mechanical Design process in choosing and producing the best prototype. Software, processors and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) were needed lots of consideration as programming needs to be completed test the prototype. Arduino was the software chosen to be the programming platform for the microcontroller used in the prototype. After programming was completed, a series of tests, trials and amendments were made to final design. There were some setbacks such as programming complexity and slight delay constraints, but the main objectives was accomplished. The motion of the human body for a single limb was able to be tracked and simulated a user interface was also made in order for any user to simulate the motion of different at will. In the end, the prototype was created while satisfying most of the Engineering requirements. Several areas were highlighted with some potential solutions for further research to be done which might greatly improve even more the already improved new system that was developed.
