Abstract
Buildings all around the world incorporates reinforced concrete frames as a major part of its structure. Reinforced concrete frames behaves as a continuous beam as opposed to a simply supported beam. Continuous beam results in less maximum shear force and bending moment, as well as enhances the rigidity of the structure. However, analyzing the behaviour of the continuous beam proves to be a challenge. With reinforced concrete being a composite material, it conflicts with several fundamental assumptions of basic mechanics of materials. In addition, analyzing the interaction behaviour between concrete and steel is very complex to be determined manually. Finite element analysis softwares, such as LUSAS, are capable of providing numerical solution to problems that would be too complex to be solved manually by using computer simulation. Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) are retrofitted onto the continuous beams as external flexural strengtheners. When bonded to reinforced concrete members, CFRP composites improve the reliability and the efficiency of the reinforced concrete members. The objective of this project is to analyze the behaviour of the continuous beam retrofitted with flexural strengtheners subjected under sagging moment and hogging moment using finite element analysis. Consequently, the next objective would be to determine the optimized length of the CFRP retrofitted onto the beam that is reliable and cost effective. Based on the simulations and analyses, the optimized length percentage of flexural strengtheners to be provided on continuous beams designed to resist sagging moment and hogging moment are 70% and 27.5% of the beam's span respectively.
