Abstract
The transition towards a low-carbon economy is crucial in order to address climate change and achieve international goals for reducing emissions. Due to its comparatively lower carbon intensity in comparison to other fossil fuels, natural gas has become a prominent participant in this transition. Natural gas functions as an intermediary fuel, providing a more environmentally friendly option compared to coal and oil for the purposes of generating power, carrying out industrial activities, and providing heat. Its burning releases a lower amount of greenhouse gases, making it a viable option for reducing emissions in the short to medium term. In addition, power plants that use natural gas provide flexibility to supplement intermittent renewable energy sources, therefore guaranteeing the stability and dependability of the power grid during the transition phase. To achieve sustainable energy transitions and fulfill global climate targets, it is crucial to utilize the benefits of a particular situation while also tackling the difficulties that come with it. This chapter highlights the significance of employing natural gas as a means of transitioning to a low-carbon economy. ?
