The substantial presence of ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3?N) in leachate has precipitated a severe decline in aquatic ecosystems and poses considerable threats to human health. The conventional methods for NH3?N removal suffer from various drawbacks. This review meticulously finds and combines the key characteristics and potential risks of NH3?N. Given the challenges posed by this hard-to-treat pollutant, it emphasizes the critical need for careful consideration to figure out the most effective treatment approach. An excess of NH3?N can impede microbial activity, leading to a decline in the removal efficiency of the treatment system. Hence, it becomes crucial to prioritize a sustainable alternative for leachate treatment by delving into a comprehensive exploration of the adsorption process for NH3?N removal. This study supplies a comparative analysis of key adsorbent materials, encompassing carbon- and non?carbon-based variants. This overview includes insights into modifications, treatment conditions, and the efficiency of NH3?N removal. The theoretical and experimental findings shed light on the intricate interplay of chemical and physical forces that bind the adsorbent and NH3?N, enhancing our comprehension of their interaction in the treatment process. Common isotherm models are elucidated to inform future optimization strategies for NH3?N removal. ? 2024 Elsevier Ltden_US
