Abstract
Strong criteria in orthopaedics are still to be met at present, in bone and joint replacement as well as in restoring and regenerating bone defects. In the last 50 years, significant developments have been made in the field of biomaterials, where materials intended for biomedical purposes have evolved through three distinct generations: first generation (bioinert materials), second generation (bioactive and biodegradable materials) and third generation (materials engineered to elicit unique molecular responses). In this paper, the effect of doping the Y-TZPs ceramic with titanium (IV) oxide (TiO2) and hydroxyapatite (HA) on the mechanical properties was investigated in this research. The TiO2/HA/Y-TZP composites prepares and were characterised by means of physical and mechanical properties. It was then evaluated by performing bulk density and Vickers hardness. The used in orthopaedic applications is discussed, as well as the different approaches used to fulfil the challenges faced by this medical field. The 3Y-TZP composites contains with TiO2 (0-15 wt%) and HA (0-15 wt%) were sintered between 1200 °C and 1400 °C, with a ramp rate of 10 °C per minute with a holding time of 2 hour. It can be seen that HA has a better result based on the result that had been obtained and it might give a promising result that it can enhance the Y-TZPs ceramic mechanical and physical properties to be used in biomedical purpose as a good biomaterial.
