Abstract
The world is more into IoT devices in these upcoming generations. Copper wire is being used for most of the devices but the disadvantages of the copper wire play a big role in most of the problems faced by the devices. Thus, this project has been done to prove that a power distribution system using optical fiber will be able to supply sufficient power to power up IoT devices. Throughout the project, laser diodes, 300m of optical fiber cable, and photovoltaic cell were the main components to complete the power distribution system. The laser diode is used to convert the electrical to optical power. Where else the 300m optical fiber cable will be the transmission medium for the optical power to travel to the PPC. The PPC will convert the optical power to electrical power and supply to the load.Upon testing, the laser diode achieved the highest optical output power of 2242 mW when 3 A of injected current was driven to it.Meanwhile, the highest and lowest power obtained during the measurement for the output power of 300 m optical fiber cable are 1306 mW and 3 mW at a driven current of 1 A and 3 A respectively. The electrical output power achieved by the PPC was 279 mW at an injection current of 2.5 A. Furthermore, the performance of the core components was measured at every stage of the project and the efficiency of the full system was also measured. The average efficiency obtained by the 300 m optical fiber cable was 58%. Besides that, the PPC obtained its highest efficiency of 28.5 when 2.5 A was injected. However, the lowest and the highest efficiency obtained by the whole system was 13.8% and 16.5% at 1.5 A and 2.5 A of injected current respectively. The results obtained from the efficiency concluded that the increase in the injected current could increase the efficiency of the full system. After that, the next stage was to power up the IoT devices using the output of the PPC, at this point the voltage regulator was used to regulate the voltage from the PPC to provide sufficient power the IoT devices. Finally, the system was successful when the IoT devices such as LED and Temperature and Humidity sensors were powered up.
