Abstract
For the past few years, the world has changed enormously. There are many developments have been seen in all around the world. Due to these rapid developments, a large amount of energy is needed, in this case; electricity. Therefore, nowadays the power system becomes more complicated and larger capacity can be supplied, in order to ensure that enough energy can be supplied for the developments. Due to this concern, the engineers would experience problems in terms of voltage stability and power transfer capability. The main concern in this project is a Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) effects on the voltage stability and the power transfer capability. There had been previous work done about FACTS controllers. Since previous works related to FACTS did not compare the performance of FACTS Controllers, therefore this project presents the performance of FACTS Controllers, in terms of improving voltage stability and power transfer capability. A method which is known as Continuous Power Flow (CPF) approach using Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) has been used for the project in order to study the effect of FACTS Controllers on the system. The system that is used in this project is IEEE 24 bus Reliability Test System. It is consists of 11 machines. First, for the base case analysis, the CPF method has been applied without the consideration of installing a FACTS controller to the system. From the base case analysis, the suitable location will be identified by interpreting the voltage profiles of each bus and the line flows will be analyzed. After that, the FACTS Controllers were inserted one at a time and CPF report is performed on the system. There are some improvements in power system parameters; in terms of voltage stability and power transfer capability after a different type of FACTS controllers are installed in the system. There are three different types of FACTS Controllers used in the project, which are Shunt, Series and Shunt-Series FACTS controllers. After comparing the results from those configurations of the system, it can be observed that Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) had improved the system in terms of voltage stability and power transfer capability compared to other FACTS Controllers.
