dc.description.abstractYttria stabilized zirconia or commonly known as yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP), has widely used in industry as a structural ceramic. It has become an important advanced ceramic due to its high toughness, high thermal stability and other superior properties. Zirconium ceramic was discovered and noted as ceramic with extraordinary physical properties. Over time many researches were done widely to exploit the characteristics and application of zirconia ceramics. As a result, zirconia's exceptionality in self-healing was discovered and was known as transformation toughening. This process can be described as an occurring of transformation of the tetragonal structure of zirconia to monoclinic phase spontaneously with the presence of crash due to stress. This phase transformation is accompanied by a volume expansion of about 4% which creates a comprehensive stress around the particle providing inhabitation to the cracks progression. This exceptionality has encouraged the use of zirconia in leading industries. Years by the use of Zirconia has broadened into many different industries mainly to name, the medical industry. for certain duration. There are signs of slow progression of tetragonal to monoclinic transformation followed by other effects such as corrosion, instability and surface micro cracking. Based on the research done, using methods such as adding dopants, suitable sintering temperature, and fabrication process would most likely reduce the degradation process of zirconia. The objective of this project is to evaluate the mechanical properties of Cerium Oxide doped Y-TZP. In this research, Yttrium Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystalline (3Y-TZP) will be used and doped with Cerium Oxide (Ce,O,) to see the mechanical properties of this composition. This research will also test the effects of the sintering temperature and the composition percentage of the dopants used to see its effect on the mechanical properties.
