Abstract
Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) is a cutting-edge technology implemented in the power transmission industry to enhance the efficiency and reliability of electricity networks. Unlike traditional static line ratings, which rely on conservative estimates of worst-case environmental conditions, DLR utilizes real-time data on vicinity, weather, and line status to dynamically adjust the permissible load on transmission lines. DLR methodologies provide a more accurate assessment of thermal capacity, maximize the use of existing infrastructure, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. Despite its advantages, DLR implementation faces challenges, including the need for sophisticated monitoring equipment, robust data processing capabilities, and modified thermal models. This paper aims to chronicle the evolution of DLR, discuss major technological advancements, and explore future directions in the field of overhead lines and underground transmission cables. The review covers the historical context of DLR, current technological trends, emerging methodologies, DLR studies in tropical and subtropical regions, and the impact of DLR. By examining these themes, the paper provides a comprehensive overview of DLR technology, highlighting future research areas where DLR could transform power system operations and support the transition to a more flexible, efficient, and sustainable energy grid. ? 2024 IEEE.
