Abstract
ABSTRACT In this project, the Zirconium based metal-organic framework (MOF), UiO-66 were successfully synthesized with terephthalic acid, pure and commercial recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) as modified samples. UiO-66 content has been synthesized by a solvothermal method in which a reaction mixture in N-N'-Dimethylformamide (DMF) of zirconium (IV) oxynitrate and terephthalic acid and reaction mixture in N-N'-Dimethylformamide (DMF) between zirconium (IV), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and formic acid has been heated at 120 ° C for 24 hours. The sample was found to be light yellowish and white powder. The UiO-66 materials synthesized were characterized by using X-Ray Diffraction Analyses (XRD), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX). The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) pattern revealed octahedral planes with promising high-intensity peaks of (111), (200), and (600) 2θ of 7.3 °, 8.4 °, and 25.6 ° as recorded in the UiO-66. The crystalline dimensions were determined with the Scherer equation within the range 10.4 nm – 31 nm. The TGA results showed a three-stage weight loss at ca. 40°C - 100°C. The second weight loss was examined at temperature 350°C - 600°C, and the third degree of weight loss, starting at 601°C - 900°C. Images from FESEM show that the form of an octahedral crystal with a crystal size of 5μm-1μm. EDX analysis results showed the existence of 3 elements of Zirconium (Zr), Carbon (C), and Oxygen (O) in UiO-66. Therefore, UiO-66 using terephthalic acid and commercial RPET were successfully synthesized in this study.
