The aims of this project are to compare different types of current sensors and develop a low cost electrical energy monitoring with the objective to improve building energy utilization. The sensor characteristics (such as linearity and cost) are being compared and then one of them has been selected for implementation of electricity consumption monitoring system. In this project a current transformer (CT) is selected as a current flow sensor and a low cost micro-controller as the main processor for the monitoring system. The signal obtained from the CT sensor has to be conditioned (biasing, filtered) and then converted to direct voltage values, subsequently converted to digital format. Essentially the monitoring system consists of a CT, condition circuit, microprocessor, communication, and software components executing on a computer (PC). The acquired data from sensor will be acquired by the micro-controller and forwarded to the PC. The PC will display the data in graphical format. Experiment have been performed with different loads to obtain different current ranges and displayed on the PC. Also experimental has been carried out to compare the measured values using digital meters against the output of the sensor. The experimental result produced validates the performance of the sensor, which is suitable for the energy monitoring system.
