Abstract
Three-dimensional composites use preforms of fibre built from yarns or tows structured in complex structures of three dimensions. These can be formed from a weaving process in 3D, a braiding process in 3D or a short fibre lay in 3D. To create the composite material, resin is added to the preform 3D. The purpose of the research is to evaluate the overall mechanical properties of 3D nano-composite material so that the applications of the 3D composite can be varied. The raw materials of epoxy resin and hardener were mixed as the fabrication of the specimens and PU foam as kaolin were filled as enhancement/filler. Several mechanical testings were performed such as compression test, bending test and drop impact test to evaluate the strength of the 3D composite. As a result, the kaolin filled 3D composites do improve the overall strength of the plain 3D composites by around 25% to 159% based on a specific test.
