In this paper, the concept of Partial Discharge (PD) and Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) are discussed as they are among the most commonly used technique by utility company to enhance the fault characterization during routine based maintenance or failure in the system. The aim of this paper to review a technique that is able to shorten the period of cable fault diagnosis so that the replacement of cable can take place more efficiently. Correspondingly, this paper will investigate the ability of combining both techniques (PD and TDR) to reduce the cable replacement cost and subsequently prolong the lifespan of the cable. The proposed technique combination of PD, water tree and TDR with finite element analysis has been discussed in this paper. It can be seen, for future development the technique combination could be improve to monitor the cable health efficiently. 2020, World Academy of Research in Science and Engineering.
