Abstract
This paper presents an IoT based real-time water quality monitoring system for swimming pools. For most swimming pools, the maintenance work is done based on fixed schedule irrespective of the water quality condition. This may cause some issues, such as unnecessary waste of water in the case of over maintenance. In the case of under maintenance, the pool water could end up being cloudy, murky, discolored and dirty. A smart water quality monitoring system using an IoT platform is proposed to automatically monitor various water quality parameters and help to optimize maintenance work by suggesting the appropriate maintenance tasks to be performed. Technically, the proposed system consists of a controller connected to multiple sensors which read pool water parameters and transmit the data to a cloud server. The parameters read by the sensors are pH level, temperature, turbidity, chlorine residual and water flow. There is also a Web portal where users can view the collected parameters and the recommended maintenance tasks proposed by the system. In addition to making the monitoring system real time and more accessible to users, this work also aims to provide an appropriate algorithm for suggesting the maintenance task to be performed based on the water quality parameter reading. 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
