Abstract
ABSTRACT Palm oil is the most efficient oleaginous trim worldwide. Malaysia is one of the world's leading palm oil producers and exporters. In Malaysia almost 4,49 million hectares of oil palm grown, and 17,73 million tons of palm oil and 2,13 tons of palm kernel olive oil are produced in a single year. Oil palm waste in Malaysia thus posed a significant problem of waste disposal. The usage of the oil palm products such as empty fruit bunch (EFB) fibres can reduce the current wastage. This research focused on the acoustic performance of EFB fibres as a sound absorber using constant thickness at 16 mm and different densities of 120 kg/m3, 140 kg/m3, 160 kg/m3 and 180 kg/m3. There are two different fibre types, which are the short strand fibre and the fined fibre,which show different results on sound absorption coefficient (SAC) value. Furthermore, short strand fibre shows the result of increasing density can enhance SAC value (α = 0.92) at 4424 Hz for 180 kg/m3 which is the highest SAC value for the short strand fibres. Moreover, the fined fibre recorded a significant result, where the lowest density (120 kg/m3) achieved the highest SAC value of α = 1.00, which is a total sound absorption at 4264 Hz. As the density increases, the maximum SAC value achieved for each sample starts to decrease. The results also compared the same density with different fibre types of 160 kg/m3 and 180 kg/m3 samples undergo cross-point where the short strand fibres have better sound absorption at high frequency range which is at the range of 4250 – 6000 Hz while fined fibres have better sound absorption at lower frequency range at 500 – 4250 Hz.
