Coal blending at pulverised coal-fired power stations is becoming increasingly common as electric utilities attempt to save costs, meet gas emission limits and improve the combustion behaviour of the coals. The main objective of this project is to determine the fuel characteristics analysis of oil palm waste charcoal blended with coal at different blend ratios. In this project, the oil palm waste used to be converted into charcoal was Empty Fruit Bunch (EFB). This report discusses the evaluations and predictions of the behaviour of EFB charcoal blended with coal. It begins with a literature review mainly on why coals are blended, the methods and sample preparation of blending coals, fuel properties of the blends as well as the particle size analysis. Current practice to determine the fuel properties is by obtaining the calorific value, proximate analysis and ultimate analysis of the blended fuel. This research is also enhanced with a particle size analysis where the behaviour of particles for fuel blends are analyzed. The results obtained are compared and discussed with those related analyses done previously by many others. Blending of coals with EFB charcoal method can be prevailed and fully utilised in Malaysia since the blend has many advantages as discussed. This could be seen as a replacement to that of the imported coals besides contributing to the development of renewable energy sources in Malaysia.
