The roadway system is the most widely used mode of transportation and along with it, the problem of traffic congestion. With the rise in number of vehicles, the problem is worsening. This project aims to study and provide a suitable solution to alleviate traffic congestion problems that mainly occur at intersection. This project focuses on the creation of a prototype traffic light controller which uses infrared sensors to detect traffic conditions and adjust the traffic light signals accordingly. The prototype traffic light controller was based on a real 4-way intersection located near Universiti Tenaga Nasional and it was implemented using the Altera Cyclone II FPGA Board. Software simulations were conducted on the prototype controller to obtain data on its performance and to ensure that its behavior is consistent and correct. Hardware testing was also done using the FPGA Board along with infrared sensor modules in order to confirm the controller's response with actual components. Results from both software simulation and hardware testing show that the traffic light controller is able to change the traffic light signals based on traffic conditions. Results also show that the prototype traffic light controller was able to reduce the maximum waiting time by an average of about 45.2 seconds when compared to the original controller.
