Abstract
Hydropower or water power is a power derived from energy of falling water or fast running water which can be used for useful purposes that is producing large-scale power and electricity. Hydropower is the only renewable energy technology that is commercially viable on a large scale in Malaysia such as at Kenyir hydropower station in Terengganu. A spillway is a structure used to provide the controlled release of flows from a dam which ensure that the water does not over flow and damage or destroyed the dam. Thus, energy dissipators which is any mechanism designed to protect downstream areas from erosion by reducing the velocity of water flow to tolerable limits is built to prevent overflow of water at spillway. In this study, gabion block with length of 330m are plan to be built along the spillway at Kenyir hydropower dam. After discussion with all the design team, granite stone with size 6" x 9" is used to make gabion blocks. This is because, the granite with size 6" x 9" was chosen because it is more suitable for use with 4m x 1m x 1m fence and the fence used is coated galvanized wire. In order to build gabion blocks for 330m in Kenyir hydropower dam, some equipment needs to be used to facilitate the construction which includes mobile cranes (16 tonnes), excavator and rock breaker excavators. After certain design of energy dissipators are evaluated in a project, it effectiveness need to be judge thus, cost-benefit analysis can be used as the judgemental tools. Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) is vital analytical tools in assist in making judgments and appraising available options which it provides evidenced by the vast amounts of literature available from academics, CBA practitioners, and government agencies in both domestically and abroad. In this study, net present value is used to determine the suitable gabion block building along the Kenyir hydropower dam spillway. Therefore, CBA is used to select the best option of the mitigation measures for the natural rock erosion at Kenyir hydropower dam spillway by using the net present value method. iv
