Abstract
Solar have been a reliable source of renewable energy to replace the existing sources of energy for ages. One of many applications of solar energy these days is to be a supply power for portable devices. Portable devices nowadays with their vastly advanced features demanding very high power which would cause battery charge problem. Therefore, the main purpose of this project is to develop a portable solar universal charger using USB 2.0 as the interface to charge variation of portable devices. This project used components such as solar panel, Li-Po rechargeable battery, USB charging circuit with ETA9640 IC and USB 2.0 output to build the portable solar charger. The simulation is done using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The components are chosen carefully so that the portable solar charger can power up the USB 2.0 output to charge the portable devices. Majority of portable devices require 5V of output voltage and IA of output current to be successfully charged. Therefore, simulation and several tests are conducted to verify the portable solar charger can fulfil these conditions. The results are encouraging as the portable solar charger can provide the required 5V of output voltage and 1A of output current. Additionally, the efficiency test conducted in laboratory shows that this portable solar charger can achieve up to 98% of efficiency under steady state conditions.
