Abstract
This thesis objective is to understand the fundamental of substation grounding system, grid design and safety aspects. Moreover, studies on electrical transient and transient classification are used to relate the effect of transients to the grounding system. In this thesis, transients are focused to lightning strike. The approach taken is to simulate lightning strike using software and analysis is done using the data collected. CDEGS (Current Distribution, Electromagnetic Fields, Grounding and Soil Structure Analysis) software is used to do simulation in this study. By changing the magnitude, location and frequency of the lightning and soil resistivity of the substation, the effects to electric field, magnetic field, scalar potential, touch voltages and step voltages are acquired. It is concluded that frequency affect scalar potential and electric field while magnetic field is only affected when the current magnitude is high. Location of the tower and energization does not affect all the parameters analysed. These conclusions allow further improvement on the grounding system and safety in the vicinity of the substation by installing protection devices and ground rods beneath the structure.
