Abstract
This thesis reports the compression behaviour of the green brick enhanced with pennisetum purpureum ash. Based on the compressive strength characterization, the optimum mix design for green brick enhanced with pennisetum purpureum ash is determined. As cement and normal conventional brick released carbon dioxide during production, another alternative which is green bricks in introduced. It is known that green bricks or geopolymer bricks has the ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the environment and indirectly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. This study consists of destructive test and non-destructive test such as compressive strength test, water absorption test, shrinkage test and ultrasonic pulse velocity test. Unexpectedly, green brick enhanced with pennisetum purpureum ash has lower compressive strength and higher water absorption value when in compare with cement sand brick. This may due to the usage of calcium oxide powder since it required more water as it is more porous. Other alternative is recommended rather than calcium oxide powder. Nevertheless, green brick enhanced with 1.5% pennisetum purpureum ash achieved the ASTM requirements for minimum compressive strength and maximum water absorption. It is also suggested that the percentage of pennisetum purpureum ash should be increased in order to determine the optimum mix design and optimum compressive strength.
