Abstract
This thesis is to investigate and improvise the performance of local car bumper system. The composition of current local car bumpers are Polycarbonate (PC) and also Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS). This local car bumpers are not as good as imported bumpers. To improve the mechanical properties of these bumper, EPDM is added into the original compositions which are PC and ABS. This material is chosen because it is a rubbery material and it have the properties to increase the impact strength. Using injection molding process, five specimens were constructed and the first specimen is the original composition of local car bumpers which is Polycarbonate (50 wt.%) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (50 wt.%). The second specimen is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (50 wt.%), Polycarbonate (45 wt.%) and EPDM (5 wt.%). The third specimen is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (45 wt.%), Polycarbonate (50 wt.%) and EPDM (5 wt.%). The fourth and fifth specimens are the pure Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (100 wt.%) and also Polycarbonate (100 wt.%). These two pure specimens were constructed to find out the grade of the raw material supplied by the supplier separately before the mixing. These specimens underwent two types of testing which are mechanical testing and also morphological testing. For mechanical testing, Charpy Impact Test was done with 25 Joules Charpy force. For morphological testing, Scanning Electron Microscope was conducted. The procedures of these experiments are in chapter iii and the results and discussions are in chapter iv.
