Abstract
Based on the objective of this project is to study types of sand and identified which sand has higher density in Malaysia. Sand data being collected within Selangor with four different type of sample. The characteristic of sand is observed by comparing the density of the sand. Next, to determine the shielding radiation reading all sample of sand will undergo half value layer (HVL) experiment by exposing Cesium-137 (Cs-137) directly to the sand and recorded the attenuation radiation result. The results are calculated and graph of normalized intensity versus thickness of material were plotted. Value of half thickness of the sand obtained from the plotted graph. The processes to reduce the thickness of absorption for Cesium-137 (Cs-137) with limiting activity of 100mCi, two equations were involved which are the attenuation thickness equation and half value layer (HVL) equation. After attempting the result for half value thickness of sand, the effective dose limit was calculated in order to check the availability of the project to be created. After applying sand shielding, the thickness of sand will need 139.37cm thick to achieve dose rate below 0.001mSv/hr. Every 3.8cm sand thickness, the radiation of Cesium-137 (Cs- 137) will reduce to one half. Thus, using sand as shielding material with specific thickness is proved by this experiment with specific requirement.
