dc.description.abstractNeutron and gamma irradiation effect was investigated for this research. The objective of this research is to study on effect of neutron and gamma irradiation of basic filtration element on water quality index (WQI). The experiment was conducted by using basic filtration system, sand act as the main material in this experiment. The other materials used as the sample was NAHRIM lake water. The main samples were irradiated with gamma only and neutron and gamma at Malaysian Nuclear Agency, Bangi. The sands were keep in a special container to prevent the radiation from being exposed to the air. The water was taken at NAHRIM lake for the purpose of analyzing the water quality index characteristics. The design of the basic filtration system that was used in the experiment was designed and constructed by myself. Based on the results, the water that were pass through the irradiated sand have a slightly change the in terms of water quality index (WQI). The experimental result analysis was continued with electron microscope to see any changes of atom or molecules in the sands. The water quality index consists of six test parameters, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), Nitrogen Ammonia (NH3-N) and total suspended solid (TSS). There are few parameters that shows positive changes in the experiment.
