Abstract
Polymer blending has attracted much attention recently due to its cost efficient and easy way to produce a new material. Polymer blending is where two or more natural polymers are blended together to produce a new polymeric material. It is an alternative way of producing a new polymer rather than synthesizing it from the raw materials. It is usually done to enhance the mechanical properties of a polymer which enables it to be used for a wide range of applications. This research focuses on the effect of Nano- silica on the mechanical properties of Polypropylene (PP)/ Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) blend. The samples were prepared using the one step method where it was melt mixed using the twin screw extruder and the injection molding machine was silica used to produce the specimens. The mechanical properties PP/ABS/Nano composite is determined through the Impact and Hardness test. It was found that the surface hardness of the PP/ABS blend has increased with the addition of 0.5 % of Nano -silica. However, there was a significant decrease in impact strength of the PP/ABS blend. This might be due to the poor interaction between the PP and ABS matrix which leads to decrease in impact strength.
