Abstract
Designing a formula SAE chassis based on Formula SAE rules and regulation of 2018; testing the limits of the chassis by putting it under common simulation such as frontal impact, rear impact, side impact and top impact (roll –over condition). After obtaining the initial results, a comparison of results is done by putting this papers chassis design with other researchers’ condition which have done similar frontal impact, rear impact, side impact and top impact (roll –over condition) conditions. The design of the chassis are different, different types and amount of forces applied, how it is applied, material selection and chassis reference points are mimicked to create a controlled experiment where the outcomes will be determined by the design of the chassis alone. Furthermore, three optimisations are carried out. The first optimization is carried out through sizing different thickness of the tubes at crucial areas of collision. The second optimisation is the use of different materials. Finally, the third optimisation is the redesign of the chassis to eliminate unaffected beams and to reinforce crucial areas based on analysis of all previous data. The redesign of the chassis is to focus fully utilising the chassis structure to create a chassis with the highest level of structural integrity to ensure the safety of the driver with the additional consideration into weight management.
