Abstract
Malaysia, a country which is known for its tropical rainforest is blessed with abundant rainfall, averaging 3,000mm annually, which is equivalent to 990 billion cubic meters of water. These rainfalls have huge impacts on the country as they can be used as source of power generation, mode of transportation, and eventually serve some other purpose such as domestic usage and industry consumption. Furthermore, the agriculture industry such as oil palm and rubber tree in Malaysia is influenced heavily by the amount of rainfall. Hence, rainfall which means the amount of rain that falls in a certain place during a particular period is an interesting topic to be studied. To study the rainfall in Malaysia, a system is needed to collect the amount of the rainfall and eventually the reading should be analysed.. It is clear that a remedy is needed to monitor the daily rainfall in a particular area. Therefore, this project is specifically designed to develop a microcontroller based Data Acquisition System (DAQ) for measurement of daily rainfall. Since this is a rainfall measurement system, a rain sensor is used to capture and collect the rain data. As the system brain, a microcontroller will be used to perform the Analog-to- Digital Conversion. The collected rain data will then transmitted wireslessly via XBee module. In order to monitor the daily rain data, a Graphic User Interface (GUI) is developed in MATLAB to display the rain data in a tidy way. Other than displaying the rain data in the GUI, the collected rain data will be shown in Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) which is built in together with the hardware circuit design. Thus, this project design will help to measure the rain data in a more efficient and cost effective way.
