The fundamental aim of this project is to investigate the effect of thermal and electrical aging on the properties of the transformer oil and then suggest methods to detect the level of aging. This report discusses the possible alternative methods; they are measurements of de conductivity, ac conductivity, density, refractive index, viscosity, and visible spectroscopy of the oil. A comprehensive description on how each of the alternative method can be implemented and the results acquired is presented. Two types of samples, the capped samples and the PTFE samples are prepared in the lab to investigate the effect of thermal aging and a sample called electrical sample for electrical aging. A comparison is then made between the prepared samples and a sample from an 'in-service transformer' known as the turret sample to verify the results obtained. A series of discussion done in this report leads to a conclusion that thermal and electrical aging changes the properties of the transformer oil and the rate of aging is affected by the amount of oxygen present during the process. Also, all the methods recommended can be used to observe the property change provided the samples being compared are from the same batch. However, the density measurement will provide the best accuracy and reproducibility, as it is less prone to random errors.
